January is the time of year when we all take a look at what’s happening in our lives. I may not know many specifics about yours, but I can tell you that now is the perfect time to review your career, and consider new ways to create work opportunities for yourself. Do you need better materials? Should you expand your skill base? What can you do to make yourself more marketable?

First, take a look at the kind of work you are getting as a performer. Compare that to other types you’d like to be doing more of? Would you like to move into film, or have voiceover work? Would you like to tour with a show or have a cabaret act? Make a list, and be specific.

Next, think about ways to improve both your skills and marketing materials that would best help you obtain those goals. Yes, I said marketing materials. That’s what your headshot, voiceover demo, web site, Facebook page and all the rest are: your marketing materials. Add some fresh content to your web site or Facebook page: production stills, your last commercial, or footage from a performance. If you don’t have a web site or Facebook page, make getting one your number one priority! If you’ve aiming for voice work and never done voiceover, get some training and create that killer demo. If you need to expand current VO opportunites, upgrade your demo, or set up that home studio.

The point is, now is the time to act. Even in a down economy, someone is going to get the jobs for the commercials, films, stage shows, and voiceovers that are being produced. That someone will most likely be the one who is best prepared and who markets him or herself most effectively. That someone might as well be you.

From new headshots to comp cards, from voiceover lessons to acting classes, don’t forget to use TheActorsGuide.com Online Directory.. All the resources you need to accomplish your goals are here.

So Happy New Year everyone…and carpe diem!

R Kay

While you’re out shopping for holiday gifts don’t forget to give yourself a gift too. New business!

During December, most industry organizations throw a holiday party for their members and guests. It’s a great chance to meet up and begin or strengthen relationships with the folks who can cast you, in an informal non-business setting.

After all, most of this business is about relationships: people getting to know people. But here’s a hint: Less is more. When you meet that producer, casting director, or agent, for the first time, don’t shove your business card, headshot and resume in their faces. If they ask, fine. If not, don’t bring it up.

This is a time to share seasonal goodwill and get to know one another, so be respectful. Show genuine interest in others, don’t just fake it. Be able to hold a conversation about something other than your work. And remember, these parties are about taking a break and having some fun. That goes for you too!

To make sure you don’t miss an important get together, I’ve listed some organizations from around the region that are having holiday functions below. Click through to check out their info.

Happy Holidays!

Well, folks, the great new Georgia Film Tax Incentives are starting to pay off. Four films are in the pipeline for the first quarter of 2009. Keep an eye on our blog for more specifics.

If you’re an actor with an agent, be sure to stop in with treats (don’t get carried away – it’s not a bribe) to remind them you are around. DO NOT call them daily…that’s direct route to the B list. This might also be a good time to get new headshots for a fresh, more up-to-date look.

If you are new to the industry and don’t yet have an agent, do two things:

Get familiar with names in the Actor’s Guide Online Industry Directory, and get the copy The Actors Guide to help you select and get represented by a good agent.

Keep up with who is looking for extras at the Georgia Film, Music & Digital Entertainment Office web site.

Stay tuned for more!

R Kay
